Discount Examples

This is an extension of the normal rules section and discount rules work in the same way as everywhere else, but we thought we’d walk you through a few examples so that you can get a stronger grip on things.

We are going to cover the rules and date range sections of discounts. If you are looking for help on the other sections take a look at the discount overview.

Seasonal Discount

Here we are going to create a discount you would typically see over a particular season, such as a Christmas sale or early summer sale. The main aspect of this discount will be the date range, since that is what controls when a discount is active.

Go ahead and enter the NameCodeDiscount Type, and a Value for this discount. Since this is a seasonal discount we would recommend that you do not set a usage limit, they are better used for short promotions.

It makes sense to have this discount apply to all your products since you often see “10% off everything” during these kinds of promotions.

In the Visibility section set Active in shop to unchecked.

Date range is the most important part of this discount. Here you need to select when you want this promotion to start and end. For something like as Christmas discount it would be good to set the start date on 1st December, and have it finish 25th December, and then you can have a new after Christmas sale set to run on the 26th December onward. As far as times go it doesn’t really matter at this point, however having a discount start at 00:00 and end at 23:00 makes things a bit easier. Remember to uncheck the No end date box.

Fixed Value of Individual Product

This type of discount is useful if you have too many of a particular item and you want to make room for something else, or if the next version in the brand range is coming out soon and you want to see out this version before it loses value.

Go ahead and enter the NameCodeDiscount Type, and a Value for this discount. In this example we are running a Money off fixed value discount. Limiting this kind of discount is useful if you only have a certain amount of this item and you don’t want to order more once it has sold out. Find out what the stock value of the product you want to set a discount for is, and then set the Limit to that number.

Uncheck the Applies to all products box.

Set the Products must match button to All Rules. This section doesn’t really matter since we’re only going to be creating one rule so either All Rules or Any Rules would apply here. In the Include section click on Add Rule, select Single Product in the Products matching dropdown, and then begin typing your product in the text box. When your product shows up in the text box click on it to set it into the rule. There isn’t any need to create Exclude rules here since everything that doesn’t match the single product we just chose will be excluded automatically.

In the Visibility section set Active in shop to checked.

The Date range you set here completely depends on your intentions for this promotion. Since we’ve set a limit for this discount it makes sense to set the start date as the same day you intend to tell your customers about the promotion. If the purpose of this discount is to get rid of some stock at a discounted price then it makes sense to have No end date set to checked.

Percentage Discount of Whole Product Category or Brand

Running this type of promotion is a great way to drum up excitement for a new brand or category and are generally time limited or usage limited.

Go ahead and enter the NameCodeDiscount Type, and a Value for this discount. In this example we are running a Percentage based discount. Decide if you want to limit the usage amount or the date range. You can limit both, and your promotion will end whenever either one of the limits is hit, whichever comes first.

Make sure that Applies to all products is unchecked.

Click on Add Rule inside the Include section. In the Products matching dropdown select Category or Brand depending on what you want to discount, and in the text box find the category or brand. Keep in mind that you can add several categories and brands into this rule. If you do add multiple categories or brands make sure to set Products must match to Any Rules.

Set the Visibility of this discount to whatever you need. If you set the Start date to be sometime in the future then you can leave this set to inactive as the discount will automatically activate when the Start date is hit.

Go ahead and set the date ranges here. It’s generally ok to have no end date on this type of discount if you have already set a usage limit, however if there is no usage limit then we suggest having an End date.

Exclude Category from Discount

Excluding products from a shop-wide discount is an incredibly useful feature, especially if you have products that are vastly more expensive than other, or products with a smaller profit margin than others.

In the Exclude section set the Products must match button to All Rules and then click on Add Rule. Select Categoryfrom the Products matching dropdown then find the category you are looking for in the text box. You can exclude more than one category at a time if you want, but if you do this make sure you set the Product must match button to Any Rules

Include Category and Exclude Product

Sometimes you’ll want to run a promotion on products inside a category, brand, or group except for a few. This is useful if you have a handful of products where the profit margins aren’t as high as other products in the same category, brand or group.

Go ahead and enter the NameCodeDiscount Type, and a Value for this discount. In this example we are running a fixed value Money off discount. Decide if you want to limit the usage amount or the date range. You can limit both, and your promotion will end whenever either one of the limits is hit, whichever comes first.

Make sure that Applies to all products is unchecked.

In the Include section set Products must match to All Rules. Click on Add Rule, select Category from the Products matching dropdown, and then find your category using the text box. You can include more than one category at a time if you want, but if you do this make sure you set the Product must match button to Any Rules

In the Exclude section set Products must match to All Rules. Click on Add Rule, select Single Product from the Products matching dropdown, and then find the product you want to exclude using the text box. You can exclude more than one product at a time if you want, but if you do this make sure you set the Product must match button to Any Rules

Let’s take a moment to run through what we’ve just done here. We’re saying that we want to set a discount on all the product in the category you just selected in the Include section EXCEPT the single product or products you selected in the Exclude section.
